Mortality

This butterfly lay dead on the sidewalk when I photographed it.

Today I went to a "Celebration of Life" for a longtime colleague who was an office-mate for a number of years. He was only 10 years older than me.

He was a tough, hockey player up till the last couple of years, an amazing athlete. He was a guy's guy who openly loved and respected his wife and their children, and delighted in their grandchildren. He taught, did woodwork, built their cottage, sailed, and coached hockey. I was a touchy feminist, and he never offended me. I enjoyed his company and respected him as a teacher.

I liked him.

He had a good life. I'm sad anyway.

Leonard Cohen's "Tiny Corner"

I've loved Leonard Cohen's songs since I bought this

(as a record) when it first came out.

I still love his music, especially the lyrics, and his metaphorical way of thinking.

From Jian Ghomeshi's Guardian Interview with Leonard Cohen
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jul/10/ghomeshi-interviews-leonard-cohen

I always had a notion that I had a tiny garden to cultivate. I never thought I was really one of the big guys. And so the work that was in front of me was just to cultivate this tiny corner of the field that I thought I knew something about, which was something to do with self-investigation without self-indulgence. Just pure confession I never felt was really interesting. But confession filtered through a tradition of skill and hard work is interesting to me. So that was my tiny corner, and I just started writing about the things that I thought I knew about or wanted to find out about. That was how it began.

This reminds me of Matsuo Basho's
The beginning of art:
A rice planting song
In the back country.

Twitter & Demographics

I spent some time with a young friend today (she's 16) and we talked a bit about Twitter. She uses it with her friends and some really old lady in England. (Even I agree with "really old" to describe someone who is apparently 104.) I was curious about how she and I fit the demographics of Twitter-users, so I went to Google and found this, based on a PEW report -

Picture 2.png

So, according to PEW, I'm part of 4% of my age group and teens aren't even mentioned. The median age is 31, so neither she nor I fit there.

So I searched a little further, and found this -

Nielsen NetView has quite different numbers, four times as many for my age group as the PEW results.

So who should I believe? And why?
